C-103 Katsuura Big “Hina” Doll Festival

Experience the breathtaking world of Japan’s traditional Hina Dolls🎎
In Japan, March 3rd is celebrated as “Hinamatsuri“, also known as the Doll Festival or Girls’ Day. It is a traditional event where families pray for the healthy growth and happiness of their daughters. The origins of “Hinamatsuri” date back to the Heian period (8-12 century), when people practiced “nagashi-bina”, a ritual in which simple paper or straw dolls were used to absorb misfortune and then floated down a river to purify and protect the household. Over time, this custom evolved into the beautifully crafted hina dolls displayed today.
At this time of year, not only people having daughter all over Japan display Hina dolls in their homes, but we can also see a variety of Hina dolls on display in storefronts and shopping streets.
The Katsuura Big Hina Festival, held in Katsuura City in Chiba Prefecture, is a spectacular event where visitors can experience this Japanese tradition on an impressive scale. Across the city, around 30,000 hina dolls donated from all over Japan are displayed, creating a stunning and unforgettable sight.
This festival is traditionally held from late February until March 3 each year. In 2026, the festival will take place from February 21 to March 3.
** You can also enjoy the cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers at the same time.
