G-102 Mt. Tanigawa Trekking
From casual hiking to advanced mountain climbing!
Variety of mountains that beginners and advanced climbers can enjoy 🙂
Mount Tanigawa is a 1,977m-high rocky mountain towering over the border between Gunma and Niigata prefectures. Renowned as one of Japan’s 100 most famous mountains, especially famous for its twin peaks!
Relatively easy access from Tokyo metropolitan area makes it a popular destination for hikers looking for a variety of activities, from not only day hikes but also traverses, rock climbing, and stream climbing.
Located in a heavy snowfall zone, snow remains late into the year, creating abundant streams. Due to the harsh climate, the tree line, which is usually around 2,500-3,000m, is located as low as 1,500m. This allows visitors to see rare alpine plants even at this relatively low altitude, adding to its appeal.
Tenjin-daira and the areas between two peaks are particularly known for their stunning flower fields in early summer.
A summer resort for day trip from Tokyo
Mt. Tanigawa is popular for its wide variety of hiking trails, from beginner to advanced, and the fact that it can be reached as a day trip from the Tokyo metropolitan area. The mountain has a wide variety of trails, from beginner trails that use the ropeway to advanced trails that have been selected as one of the three steepest climbs in Japan.
For advanced climbers
Mt. Tanigawa is a rugged mountain and is counted among Japan’s three greatest rock formations, along with Mt. Tsurugi and Mt. Hotaka in Northern Alps. Because a ropeway is available, the course is often introduced as a “beginner’s course,” but caution is required on the rocky areas along the way.
The weather often changes suddenly, and poor visibility is frequent. Don’t be complacent just because it’s a beginner’s course; make sure you’re well prepared in case the weather suddenly worsens!

An easy hiking course
Head to Tenjin Pass for a panoramic view of Mt. Tanigawa!
This is a circular course from Tenjin-daira that can be completed in about an hour. There are no chain sections on the course, and you can also descend by lift. If the weather is good, you can see the majestic shape of Mt. Tanigawa from Tenjin Pass.
There is a lift that runs from Tenjin-daira Ropeway Station to Tenjin Pass, so you can access the course without having to climb the mountain.

“Beautiful flowers in summer” and
“Colored leaves in autumn” are recommended!
The ropeway is open all year round, but the best times to climb are from early summer to autumn when the weather is calm. We especially recommend summer, when the flowers are beautiful, and autumn, when the leaves change color!
There is snowfall from winter to spring, so you’ll need equipment such as crampons and an ice axe. It can snow in late autumn, so be sure to check the weather forecast before climbing.
JR Doai Station, the deepest station
This train station is a 20-minute walk from the Mt. Tanigawa Ropeway station. This station has an unusual structure that draws attention from train enthusiasts as “Japan’s deepest mole station,” with the outbound platform at the bottom of 486 steps. The huge tunnel inside is like another world, making it a bit of a tourist spot. By the way, only the outbound platform is underground, while the inbound platform is above ground.
There are very few trains that pass through Doai Station, so it can be difficult to know whether you’ll arrive at the right time for your mountain climb, but buses to the Shinkansen (Bullet train) station (Jomo-Kogen Station) also stop here, so if you have the more energy, why not stop by after your hike?
