H-104 Peace Hiroshima
Praying for lasting peace for all mankind
and hope mistakes are not repeated.

On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima Prefecture, and three days later, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki Prefecture. Japan is the only country in the world to have suffered an atomic bomb.

“The Dome of Atomic Bomb Memorial” is a historical structure that exists to convey the tragic reality of the countless casualties and to ensure that the same mistake is never made again. This Dome was originally a facility called “the Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall”, which was built in 1915 to exhibit and sell local products from Hiroshima Prefecture. Designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel, the facility features a three-story brick structure with an elliptical dome on top. It was a beautiful, modern European-style building that was rare at the time, and was decorated with geometric and bold decorations in the Secession style.
At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb in human history was dropped on the east side of “the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall”, exploding about 600 meters above the ground. Hit by the blast and heat rays, buildings within a two kiro-meter radius of the hypocenter collapsed in an instant, resulting in the tragic loss of many lives.
The main parts of “the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall”, from the first to third floors, were almost completely destroyed, but the dome miraculously withstood the impact, so the framework and exterior walls remained and the building was only half-destroyed. Although the windows and floors remained, the building was eventually completely burned down by fire, leaving only the exposed steel frame and bricks. That’s why the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall came to be known as “the Dome of Atomic Bomb”.

“The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park“, located near the hypocenter, was built with the aim of praying for lasting peace for all mankind and to ensure that mistakes are not repeated.
It was completed in 1955, 10 years after the bombing, and remains a symbolic place for mourning the victims and praying for world peace.

“The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum“, established to convey the devastation of the atomic bomb to future generations, displays various documents, photos, models, and other materials related to the bombing. The permanent exhibits, which consist of six sections, allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding and experience of the state of Hiroshima before and after the bombing, the overall picture of the damage caused by the bombing, and the dangers of nuclear weapons. The painful and vivid exhibits, such as the tattered belongings, the voices of anger and suffering of bereaved families, and the lives of the victims who had everything taken from them, will make you feel the despicability of the atomic bombing. In recent years, the number of foreign visitors to the museum has increased, and many visitors are shocked by the reality of the damage caused by the bombing and the threat of nuclear weapons.

The photos were taken at the museum by myself in March 2015.
As I walked through the exhibits, tears welled up and many of the photos ended up out of focus.
I wonder if you will be able to look at these photos without turning away.
Hiroshima is not only a place of tragedy, but also a place where people from all over the world come to reflect on peace.
Understanding the past is one of the most powerful ways to protect our future.
I truly hope that everyone visiting Japan for the first time will take the time to visit this museum.
