Higashi Chaya District

Higashi Chaya District is one of Kanazawa’s leading tourist destinations. The old townscape with beautiful latticework and stone pavements has been designated as an “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings”.

There are plenty of shops and cafes dealing with Japanese sweets, traditional crafts, miscellaneous goods, etc., you can enjoy shopping and dining in a charming townscape. Kimono is perfect for the old-fashioned teahouse district, it’s possible to rent a kimono and enjoy walking around the town. In addition, at teahouses and “Machiya”, you can enjoy geisha performance, experience the tea ceremony, and making your original incense.
**Kodo (incense) is one of Japan’s three major arts, along with flower arrangement and tea ceremony.

1) “Geisha” performance and “Ozashiki asobi”

Known as the historic city of Kanazawa, the performing arts and culture that have been passed down from old times still continue to entertain visitors.

“Ozashiki asobi” with “Geisha” is one of them.

Kanazawa’s Chaya (= teahouse) District has a long history, and Kanazawa “Geisha” have refined their art performance and inherited the spirit of hospitality along with the history of Kanazawa since the feudal period. It is customary for Kanazawa Geisha to visit the mayor of Kanazawa before their debut, and it is one of the local cultures that Kanazawa holds dear.

In Higashi Chaya District, you can enjoy playing games with real geisha. Normally, it is taken place only at night, but we have prepared a special daytime plan for one hour including a drink, so that it is easy for tourists to use.

2) Making your original incense

In Japan  incense  has a history about 1,500 years with Buddhism.

It will be held in the a 100-year-old Kanazawa “Machiya” (= traditional wooden townhouse). Listen to dozens of precious herbal incense ingredients and fragrant wood, and psychology and incense experts will counsel you in a relaxing atmosphere. In addition, we will offer a relaxing incense experience by burning natural fragrant wood (sandalwood, agarwood, etc.) with incense charcoal and listening (smelling). Custom-made incense are created according to the emotions and physical conditions of each person. This is a valuable course where you can also experience how to use the incense you made at the end.

You can choose from the following two courses;

  1. Zukou (Incense)
    Powdered portable incense that can be used without fire. Carry it around and swing it out when you want to change your mind.
  2. Incense bag
    Use it when storing important items such as clothes, kimono, and axis, or put it in your bag.

3) Tea ceremony with Kimono + Lunch

“Chanoyu” (= tea ceremony) has been systematized as a Japanese hospitality culture by pouring various aesthetic elements into it. When you are in the tearoom, all five senses would come lively.
In addition, the way of tea ceremony, which was completed as a culture with a unique form and aesthetic sense of Japan, combined with the spiritual background of Zen, made the sensibility of simplicity and tranquility more sophisticated.

In the tea room, which was renovated from a 100-year-old Kanazawa “Machiya” (= traditional wooden townhouse), you can enjoy the sight of flowers and hanging scrolls, the movements of the tea ceremony, and also you can feel the tactile sensation of the warmth and softness of the tea bowl on your hands and lips. In addition the sound of boiling hot water or pouring water that makes satisfy your sense of hearing, the aroma and taste of tea, and the dishes made with seasonal ingredients will fully exercise your five senses, lead you to a world where is comfortable both physically and mentally.
